Essential Question: What struggles do women face as minority in the Fire Department?

While doing my project I wanted to explore how there are gender inequalities in the work force, specifically in the Fire Department because it is not a job people think of a woman doing. This project taught me that it takes a superwoman to do this job because women in the department must do their jobs just as well as the men, and still remain confident in their sexuality despite the stereotypes that have been placed upon them by society.

So what’s next for women in the fire department? Well, it really is in the hands of the people to decide how they want to judge these women and how they will choose to stop gender inequality in the work place. In the past couple of years there has been a steady increase on the amount of women joining the department. This is a great step in the right direction as long as these women can remain strong and maintain a good image inspiring other women to join. Maybe if there can be more than just one woman at a station the discrimination wouldn’t be as bad. Also, society will stop believing the stereotypes that women are less feminine because they do a job that for the longest time only had men. These women are not lesbian or dikes (what society stereotypes them as). They are just doing a job that requires a lot of physical strength and a daredevil attitude. In the future, even though it may be years and years on down the line, I believe that more women will join and eventually even the playing field. Women will be saving the day and will be appreciated and recognized for it.
